Chief economist Beth Mace to focus on guiding sector through period of shifting challenges and opportunities
ANNAPOLIS (June 7, 2023) – The National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC) today announced that longtime chief economist, Beth Burnham Mace, will transition to a role as special advisor focused exclusively on monitoring and reporting changes in the economy and the capital markets impacting senior housing and care investments and operations.
Mace will analyze and report on conditions in the capital markets, providing transparency and insights to help senior housing owners, operators, and investors make crucial decisions during a particularly challenging time. Mace’s focus will include data review and analysis, presentations, and thought leadership.
“We are pleased Beth is willing to support NIC and the senior housing community by focusing on capital markets in this climate of uncertainty as she completes her plan to transition from full time employment,” said Raymond Braun, NIC’s president and CEO. “I am delighted that Beth has agreed to serve NIC in this important way.”
Mace has made numerous contributions to NIC during her nine-year tenure on the leadership team, including leading hundreds of webinars, conference and board presentations, and research projects. Highlights include her 2019 co-authorship of “The Forgotten Middle: Many Middle-Income Seniors Will Have Insufficient Resources For Housing and Health Care,” published by the leading health policy journal Health Affairs. This groundbreaking research defined the “middle market” for senior housing and care and has been the subject of dozens of news stories, opinion pieces, and panel discussions. Mace’s expertise and dedication have been invaluable, elevating thought leadership in the industry, and helping to position senior housing as a targeted property type among institutional investors.
“It’s been an absolute privilege to be part of NIC’s leadership team, and I am proud of our efforts to build a data and analytics powerhouse that’s directly responsive to the needs of the senior housing and care sector,” said Mace. “I will continue to serve NIC as I track, monitor, and evaluate developments in the capital markets and how these affect our sector. I hope to bring clarity and insight that help stakeholders deliver on NIC’s mission of increased access and choice in senior housing and care. I also look forward to a part-time work schedule, which is something my awesome husband John and I have planned for this past year.”
Mace joins NIC co-founder Bob Kramer as one of two senior advisors serving the organization. NIC is conducting a national search for a new head of research and analytics to fulfill her responsibilities as director of NIC’s Research and Analytics team and serving as the lead spokesperson to media on NIC analyses.
Prior to joining the NIC staff in 2014, Mace served as a member of the NIC Board of Directors and chaired its Research Committee. She was also a director at AEW Capital Management and worked in the AEW Research Group for 17 years. Prior to joining AEW, Mace spent 10 years at Standard & Poor’s DRI/McGraw-Hill as director of its Regional Information Service. She also worked as a regional economist at Crocker Bank, and for the National Commission on Air Quality, the Brookings Institution, and Boston Edison.
Mace is currently a member of the Institutional Real Estate Americas Editorial Advisory Board. In 2020, Mace was inducted into the McKnight’s Women of Distinction Hall of Honor. In 2014, she was appointed a fellow at the Homer Hoyt Institute and was awarded the title of a “Woman of Influence” in commercial real estate by Real Estate Forum Magazine and Globe Street. Mace earned an undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College and a master’s degree from the University of California. She also earned a Certified Business Economist™ designation from the National Association of Business Economists.
