Annapolis, Md. – As part of an initiative to bring increased transparency to the skilled nursing sector, NIC will release the new NIC Skilled Nursing Data Report at the 2016 NIC Spring Investment Forum in Dallas on March 10, 2016. This quarterly report, which will be publicly available at no cost, publishes select skilled nursing metrics, including data on managed Medicare rates. This report will give operators and investors timely and relevant information they need for competitive benchmarking and strategic planning.

“Traditionally we’ve relied on government reports that have 12- to 18-month-old data,” said Arnold Whitman, chairman of Formation Capital, LLC. “The timeliness of NIC’s Skilled Nursing Data Report, with the most recent data only 60 to 90 days old, is a game-changer for understanding a sector that is transforming at such an incredibly fast pace.”

The NIC Skilled Nursing Data Report provides a monthly, time-series collection of select metrics, including: occupancy, quality mix, skilled mix, patient day mix, and revenue per patient day by payor source. The first report will provide monthly data collected by NIC from October 31, 2011, through December 31, 2015. Data will be reported in the aggregate at the national level and is collected from a sampling of skilled nursing operators with multiple properties.

NIC is the first to break out data about managed Medicare rates and trends in a timely manner. Understanding the penetration rate of managed Medicare and the impact on daily rates is essential for operators and investors to make informed decisions within the market.

“To see the breakout of managed Medicare daily census and rates is key, as managed care is having a significant impact on revenue,” said Kurt Read, principal at RSF Partners. “As Medicare Advantage plans expand their market share, it’s critical for operators and investors to model this impact.”

NIC’s future plans for the NIC Skilled Nursing Data Report include increasing the sample of participating operators to allow for aggregated results to be reported at localized levels.

“The more properties that are tracked, the better insight we’ll have into how the sector is functioning,” said Bill Kauffman, NIC’s senior principal of Research & Analytics. “And that insight will be essential for making strategic investment decisions going forward.”

A link to the NIC Skilled Nursing Data Report will be distributed by email on March 10 to attendees of the 2016 NIC Spring Investment Forum, and the report will be posted to the NIC website at natinvcenterdv.wpengine.com on the same day. Attendees will be able to stop by the NIC MAP® Data Service Hub at the Forum for additional information about the report.
